A police officer living in Novo Horizonte, Brazil was about to drive his daughter to school when he noticed a black dog rummaging through his garbage bin. He recognized the dog as it was owned by his neighbor. So he didn’t think much about it.
When the pooch walked away from the trash, the officer noticed that she was carrying a small creature. His first thought was that the dog found a dead kitten. Upon closer inspection, the cop saw that it was a newborn pup, and the tiny animal was still alive.
Looking for a surrogate
The kind police officer approached the neighbor’s dog and tried to take the puppy from her. Although she didn’t turn aggressive, the female pooch refused to turn the tiny creature over. So the cop called a local rescuer that he knew. With his experience, he was able to take the puppy and named him Charlie.
The first thing that the rescuer did was to create an online campaign to help locate a nursing dog that would take care of the newborn puppy. He posted a picture of Charlie to show that the pup still needed the nurturing of a mom. A surrogate would increase his chances of surviving.
The post quickly went viral, and it didn’t take long to find a new mama dog.
Accepted
A woman living across town messaged the rescuer and told him that she has a dog that has just given birth. She is willing to let the puppy get nurtured by her pet, but only if the dog accepts her. The rescuer accepted and happily took Charlie to the woman’s house.
Fortunately, the mama dog, a Chihuahua mix named Lupi, didn’t mind and allowed Charlie to join her litter. The new source for nutritious fresh milk, combined with some antibiotics, allowed the pup to thrive and grow healthier. Charlie would stay with the kind woman and Lupi until he is big enough to feed on his own.
