49-year-old psychologist Lianne Powell was walking at a market in Vera in southern Spain when she saw an injured Greyhound, who was about 2 to 3 years old.
Lianne brought the dog to the nearest vet for assessment. Veterinarian Ellen Sobry checked the dog and it was found out that she had a broken leg. It was also observed that the dog had recently given birth, so Lianne and Ellen made it a mission to find her puppies.
After putting a cast on the mama dog’s leg, Ellen puts a collar and a long leash on her to help them find her puppies. Mama dog exactly knows what to do. Even if she is limping and sometimes dragging her injured leg, she leads Ellen and Lianne to her puppies.
Lianne, Ellen, and the mama dog walked for about three kilometers before they found the place where the mama dog kept her puppies. The puppies were inside an abandoned car and there were 10 of them! Mama dog made sure that her puppies had a warm place to stay while she looked for food in the market.
The mama dog and her puppies are brought back to Ellens’s clinic for assessment and treatment. Later on, the mama dog and the puppies will be brought to the Ibizan Hound Rescue in Murcia, Spain for rehabilitation and adoption after the mama dog recovers and the puppies are old enough. Ibizan Hound Rescue is a non-profit organization that takes in stray dogs to find loving homes for them.
Southern Spain is notorious for a high percentage of abandoned Greyhounds due to mass breeding. If not for Lianne and Ellen, the mama dog and her pups will suffer so much during winter. Owners tend to abandon the Greyhounds during the off-season and buy a new one during hunting season.
We’re happy for the mama dog and her puppies! May they soon find loving homes!
