Phaedra Barrat is the founder of a nonprofit organization in Mexico called The Balam Foundation. The group’s mission is to help their country’s homeless and wild animals. While Phaedra and her team direct their resources more on saving cats, they also provide salvation and hope to some dogs that find themselves living in the streets.
One of her more memorable and inspiring cases involved a dog called Dora. She embodied hope and resilience, and they had never seen any creature that had more determination to survive so that she could take care of her babies.
A good mom
According to witnesses, Dora was hit by a motorcycle, and the accident injured her spine. She suffered immensely, and sadly, nobody tried to help her. The damage to her back caused paralysis. The poor pooch couldn’t move her back legs or even stand up.
Despite that horrific setback, she slowly and painfully crawled back to where her puppies were staying. Dora knew that her young litter needed her. If she didn’t return to them, their chance of surviving on their own would be very slim. This alone shows how amazing this mama dog is.
Thankfully, someone saw her dedication to her babies and was moved by her love for them. The concerned person called Phaedra for help.
Hope
A two-person rescue team, led by Phaedra, immediately retrieved the homeless dog and her babies. They were heartbroken to see Dora in her terrible condition. They immediately took her to a vet, and the diagnosis was good. The dog still has sensation on her legs, and a couple of surgeries can help her recover her mobility.
In the meantime, Dora’s puppies were taken to a foster home so that their mom could focus on her recovery.
After two spinal surgeries and several weeks of healing, Dora showed good progress. Her strength returned, and she taught herself how to walk on her two front legs. When they got her a wheelchair, she started running around a lot.
Because their small town in Mexico didn’t have the facility or resources for therapy, Dora was sent to the US. As for her puppies, they all eventually found good homes that provide them the security and love that they deserve.
