What would you do if your exciting reunion with your best friend turned out to be your worst nightmare ever?
Every dog who has a buddy working far away from home feels nothing but sadness. Yet, they’re always excitedly longing for their best friend to come back again. That’s basically what Hawkeye, a Labrador Retriever, felt for a long time while waiting for his buddy, Jon Tumilson, a Navy SEAL.
Not until one day, the US announced that 22 Navy SEALs and 30 American troops were killed. This tragedy happened due to the Taliban taking down the Chinook helicopter using a rocket-propelled grenade. And unfortunately, Navy SEAL Tumilson was one of the casualties.
The long wait is over for Hawkeye; he’s meeting his buddy again. But sadly, they can never play anymore nor hug each other tightly again. Indeed, Navy SEAL Tumilson went back home; however, he was already cold and inside a casket.
Tumilson’s family brought the Hawkeye inside the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School’s gymnasium for Tumilson’s burial. And as Hawkeye walked down the aisle, beside him was the other good friend of Navy SEAL Tumilson, Scott Nichols, who was about to give a speech.
For a dog who doesn’t understand the concept of death, all Hawkeye did was to stay beside Tumilson until the very last day.
Hawkeye was lying down during the ceremony based on the photo taken by Navy SEAL Tumilson’s sister. The poor dog stayed there as if he was asking, “Why did this happen to you? We’re supposed to play but not like this. Could you stop lying down there?”
As per who will take care now of Hawkeye, that’s none other than Nichols.
Losing a friend is indeed one of the natural phenomena that cannot be readily accepted. We can’t tell how long we still have in this world. That’s why it is essential to cherish every moment, like how dogs show their love and affection.
